Russia’s war against Ukraine has uprooted millions of people, particularly in the south and east. Many have sought refuge in other parts of the country where the violence has been less intense. But it’s not JUST people. Zoo animals also need to be rescued from the fighting. It’s a logistical challenge to bring them to safety as the war rages. DW’s Mathias Bölinger reports from Odesa.

Its capital, Kiev, features the gold-domed St. Sophia’s Cathedral, with 11th-century mosaics and frescoes. Overlooking the Dnieper River is the Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a Christian pilgrimage site housing Scythian tomb relics and catacombs containing mummified Orthodox monks.
