In Pakistan, at the end of February, the Protection of Women Against Violence Bill was adopted unanimously by the Assembly of Punjab province. The legislation makes it easier for female victims to file complaints against their abusers and find refuge in women’s shelters. But religious groups say the law will encourage divorce and destroy the traditional family unit, and are urging the government to repeal it.
