World Health Organization (WHO) published this video item, entitled “Regulating cross-border marketing of alcohol” – below is their description.
This short video highlights concerning developments in the way that alcohol is being marketed worldwide, such as through increasingly sophisticated online marketing techniques and sponsorship of major sports events. The exposure of young people and heavy drinkers is of particular concern. The video accompanies the launch of the WHO technical report “Reducing the harm from alcohol – by regulating cross-border alcohol marketing, advertising and promotion”, which details the full extent of the way that alcohol is being marketed across national borders, often in violation of national regulations. The report also highlights options for the regulation of cross-border marketing of alcohol and stresses the need for strong collaboration between states in this area.
Worldwide, 3 million people die each year as a result of harmful use of alcohol, representing about 5% of all deaths. A disproportionate number of these alcohol-related deaths occur among younger people, with 13.5% of all deaths among those who are 20–39 years of age being alcohol-related.
