Refugees decry Title 42 as ‘absurd excuse’ as it stays in place

Al Jazeera English published this video item, entitled “Refugees decry Title 42 as ‘absurd excuse’ as it stays in place” – below is their description.

The Biden administration was set to end a border policy called ‘Title 42’ on Monday, but a US district judge blocked plans to lift the policy last Friday. The COVID-linked measure has allowed U.S. border authorities to carry out nearly 2 million deportations since March of 2020.

While conservative politicians like Texas Governor Greg Abbott have backed the extension of Title 42 as a way to curb immigration to the United States, human rights advocates say the measure is eroding US asylum laws and harming tens of thousands of asylum seekers.

Al Jazeera’s Manuel Rapalo reports from the Mexican border city of Tijuana.
