Record rainfall in South Korea floods streets of Seoul, killing at least 8

Global News published this video item, entitled “Record rainfall in South Korea floods streets of Seoul, killing at least 8” – below is their description.

At least eight people died and six were missing in South Korea’s capital region of Seoul, after record rainfall overnight flooded homes, roads and the city’s transit system.

People were seen wading through thigh-high waters in streets near the Gangnam subway station, one of Seoul’s most bustling business and leisure districts.

“It reminds me of Titanic,” said 31-year-old Seoul resident Lim Na-Kyung.

The Yonhap news agency said the downpour in Seoul was the heaviest in 80 years and data showed at least 765 facilities had been damaged.

President Yoon Suk-yeol had called for public employers and private companies to adjust their commuting hours and urged aggressive action in restoring damaged facilities and evacuating people in danger areas to prevent further deaths

South Korea, an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. It’s equally known for its green, hilly countryside dotted with cherry trees and centuries-old Buddhist temples, plus its coastal fishing villages, sub-tropical islands and high-tech cities such as Seoul, the capital.
