A B.C. RCMP officer has been stabbed and killed in the line of duty Tuesday.

Sources confirm to Global News the female officer was assisting Burnaby bylaw officers with a call at a homeless campsite at Broadview Park, on Canada Way between Boundary Road and Willingdon Avenue.

Burnaby RCMP are scheduled to provide an update on the fatal incident at approximately 4:30 p.m. PT.

It was originally thought there were multiple tents in the park, however, nearby residents have confirmed there is just one tent. It is not known at this time how the stabbing happened.

The last RCMP officer to die while on duty in Burnaby was Const. Terry Eugene Tomfohrm in 1967.
