A rescue operation was under way after a mass whale stranding off Australia’s southern island state of Tasmania on September 21, 2020. Around 270 whales were found trapped on two sandbars near the west coast town of Strahan. Scientists estimated dozens of the animals had already died. On September 22, a member of the rescue team said weather conditions were keeping the whales wet and cool, offering hope that the whales could be kept alive for a few more days.
