Researchers from The University of Queensland have uncovered a new species of large prehistoric crocodile that roamed the state two to five million years ago.

‘Gunggamarandu maunala’, which means ‘river boss hole head’, was documented after scientists analysed a partial skull unearthed in the 19th century.

“What’s really interesting about it is that it’s a type of false gharial, and this is a group of crocodilians that we’ve never had any evidence for, previously in Australia.” – Dr Steve Salisbury, UQ researcher.
