Sky News Australia published this video item, entitled “Queensland borders remaining open ‘do or die proposition’ for tourism industry” – below is their description.
Queensland Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind says the state’s tourism operators have been impacted heavily by border closures, welcoming the Palaszczuk government’s decision to finally open up the state. “It is a do or die proposition for us. The tourism industry in Queensland – and elsewhere – have done it really tough, and it’s such an important part of our economy, such an important employer,” he said. “This announcement will allow us to get back into business, make something of the summer season and hopefully start to recover and rebuild and fill some of the gaps made by the crisis this year.” Mr Gschwind said the Queensland tourism industry generates $28 billion a year, pointing out the way money spent in tourism circulates in a state economy between accommodation services, retail and hospitality, as well as travel and leisure services. “Some businesses are more focused on international tourism, such as the Great Barrier Reef operators, so they are doing it extremely tough,” he said. “There could be some international travel bubbles arranged between some countries … we would welcome and urge that that be the case.”
