Quebec Premier François Legault announced on Tuesday that he would have to extend COVID-19 emergency measures in three regions – Outaouais, Quebec City and Chaudière-Appalaches – for another week until May 3. This means all schools in these regions remain closed and the curfew of 8 p.m. remains in place. He added as soon as things are better controlled in these regions, primary schools will be the first to open.
Legault made the announcement during a COVID-19 briefing, held alongside Health Minister Christian Dubé and public health director Horacio Arruda.
He added that people 45 and older would be able to start getting the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine starting Wednesday.
Asked whether he had given thought to closing or barring air travel from other provinces into Quebec airports, especially given the situation in Ontario, Legault said they were having discussions with both Premier Doug Ford and the federal government about travelling between provinces as well as flights from international locations. He said he was working to ensure international flight measures like quarantine were respected and was also examining the possibility of doing more in terms of ground travellers, though did not elaborate.
On Tuesday, Quebec reported 1,136 new cases and 17 additional deaths, including two in the past 24 hours, linked to the third wave of COVID-19.
Hospitalizations, meanwhile, rose by eight to 694. However, there was a decrease of six people in intensive care units for a total of 177.
The vaccination campaign saw another 47,799 jabs given Monday. So far, there have been more than 2.4 million doses administered in the province.
