Qatar cyberattack puts fake news in focus

Qatar says it has been targeted by a hostile media campaign after fake news was published online and repeated on other outlets despite vigorous official denials.

A four-hour cyberattack hit official media on Tuesday.

Hackers posted false statements purportedly made by Qatar’s emir, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Media outlets in Saudi Arabia and the UAE went on to report the stories as fact. And their governments blocked certain Qatari media outlets, including Al Jazeera.

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports from Doha.
