Global News published this video item, entitled “Protests held across India as anger grows over gang rape, police cremation” – below is their description.
Protesters from various opposition political parties across India clashed with police on Friday as anger over the gang rape and murder of a woman from India’s lowest caste continued to grow. Two opposition politicians from the India Trinamool Congress Party briefly scuffled with police when they attempted to meet the family of the victim just outside of her village in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh. After clashes in the area on Wednesday, authorities said Thursday they were barring gatherings of five or more people and would block politicians from the area. In other localities, protesters, mainly aligned with opposition parties, carried photographs of independence leader Mahatma Gandhi and faced off with police. In the latest case of violence against women to grab headlines in India, the 19-year-old woman from the Dalit community died from injuries on Tuesday after being attacked on Sept. 14 near her home, authorities said. There was also widespread anger after the authorities had the body of the victim cremated at a ceremony her family said took place without their permission, which a district magistrate denies was the case. Uttar Pradesh, which is ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, ranks as one of the most unsafe states for women in India.
