Protests against China’s zero-COVID policy goes global in show of solidarity

Global News published this video item, entitled “Protests against China’s zero-COVID policy goes global in show of solidarity” – below is their description.

Protests against China’s strict “zero-COVID” policy and restrictions on freedoms spread to London, U.K. and Sydney, Australia in a show of solidarity with rare displays of defiance in China over the weekend.

The protests on the mainland were triggered by a deadly fire in China’s Xinjiang region last week that killed 10 people who became trapped in their apartments, in a disaster blamed in part on lockdown measures. City officials denied that.

Meanwhile, chanting “from Sydney to Shanghai, democracy will never die,” about two hundred protesters gathered outside Sydney Town Hall on Monday to show support for people protesting China’s stringent COVID restrictions.

Protesters also gathered in Hong Kong showed solidarity with the anti-COVID lockdown demonstrations on the mainland on Monday.

A small group held white sheets of paper and flowers in silence to protest over COVID-19 restrictions in Chinese cities.

Police quickly arrived at the protest, set up cordons and told the demonstrators to disperse.

Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR), is a metropolitan area and special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China on the eastern Pearl River Delta of the South China Sea. With over 7.5 million residents of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.

Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. The whole territory was transferred to China in 1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of “one country, two systems”.
