On Argentina’s Independence Day, tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Buenos Aires on Thursday to protest the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic instead.
Protesters waved Argentine flags and shouted slogans against President Alberto Fernández and Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who governed Argentina between 2007 and 2015.
Many complained about an economic crisis exacerbated by months of lockdown measures put in place in an attempt to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, at the presidential residency, Fernández defended the restrictions during an official ceremony to celebrate Independence Day. Argentina’s lockdown started on March 20 and is considered one of the longest quarantine measures imposed by any government since the beginning of the pandemic.
