Global News published this video item, entitled “Protesters in Bangkok mark 2nd Myanmar coup anniversary” – below is their description.
Thousands of Myanmar protesters gathered on Wednesday in front of the embassy and the United Nations offices in Bangkok to mark the second anniversary of the 2021 military coup in Myanmar.
Led by Myanmar pro-democracy activist group Bright Future, the protesters re-enacted how demonstrators in Myanmar had clashed with the junta in the aftermath of the coup in February 2021.
“I want everyone in the world to know Myanmar people who reside in Thailand have not given up. We will fight until we win,” protest leader Suraj Giri said.
Protesters raised three fingers to symbolize liberty, equality, and fraternity and showed photos of ousted Myanmar leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. A rally was also held in front of the United Nations offices.
“We will suffer more and get killed if (junta leader) Min Aung Hlaing stays in control, in power for any more time. We want our future back to us,” protester Seezar said.
A military-backed security council is due to issue a statement on Wednesday that may decide whether to extend a state of emergency in Myanmar, ahead of a promised election this year that critics call a sham aimed at retaining power in the country.
Some 1.2 million people have been displaced and over 70,000 have left the country, according to the United Nations, which has accused the military of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
