MPs should not be cowed by the murder of Sir David Amess, the Home Secretary has said.

Sir David, one of the country’s most respected parliamentarians, was stabbed to death as he met constituents at his regular Friday surgery in a Baptist church in Leigh-on-Sea in what police have declared as a terrorist incident.

Joining Boris Johnson and Sir Keir Starmer in Leigh-on-Sea to pay tribute, Ms Patel called for a “balance” between the safety and accessibility of MPs.

    Sir David Anthony Andrew Amess MP was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament for Southend West from 1997 until his killing in 2021. He previously served as MP for Basildon from 1983 to 1997. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He was born and grew up in Essex.

    On October 15 2021, Amess was fatally stabbed at a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, UK. A 25 year old suspect was detained at the scene.
