Prince William said that Britain’s royal family would respect any decision the Bahamas may take about its future ‘with pride and respect.’

The Duke of Cambridge made the comments on the third leg of a Caribbean tour that has been marked by protests over the British Empire’s legacy and signs of waning influence of the monarchy.

Speaking at a reception hosted by the Governor General of The Bahamas in Nassau, William said that ‘relationships evolve. Friendship endures.’

The capital is Nassau on the island of New Providence. The Royal Bahamas Defence Force describes The Bahamas’ territory as encompassing 470,000 km2 (180,000 sq mi) of ocean space. The country gained governmental independence in 1973 led by Sir Lynden O. Pindling, with Elizabeth II as its queen.
