Prince Harry launches Oman desert trek for wounded veterans

The Duke of Sussex has launched a 248-mile trek through the Oman desert, as wounded veterans follow in the footsteps of Sir Wilfred Thesiger for a challenge “unlike anything they’ve faced before”.

The Duke, who will be patron of the Walking With the Wounded expedition, said veterans would need “incredible physical and mental strength” to complete the journey, pulling a cart through searing heat through the Empty Quarter.

The journey, in which an elite band of sick and injured ex-military will trek 12 or 13 miles a day in harsh conditions, marks the 10th anniversary of the charity.

The Duke has previously joined several of its expeditions, travelling to the South Pole with a team in 2013. He is now based in Los Angeles, sending a message of well-wishes at the launch of the Walk of Oman.

Taking place at the end of this year, the walk will see the team across part of the Empty Quarter, one of the toughest regions on Earth, for a mission in partnership with the Omani armed forces and supported by the royal office of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq.

It will see veterans pay homage to the travels of intrepid writer Sir Wilfred Thesiger across the Arabian Peninsula in the 1940s.
