A First Nations Voice to Parliament should be seen as an opportunity to unite the nation, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says.
The peak Indigenous group backing the proposal, the Uluru Dialogue, has released new research claiming First Nations Australians want the reform. In a survey of 300 people, 80% backed the proposal, 10% were opposed and the rest remain undecided.
The federal opposition is calling for more detail, but is yet to announce its official position.
“What people will vote for in the referendum, if they decide to support it, is they will vote for recognition of Indigenous Australians in our Constitution, and they will vote for consultation with Indigenous people on matters that affect them.” – Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The term Indigenous Australians refers to Aboriginal Australians as well as Torres Strait Islanders, and the term should only be used when both groups are included in the topic being addressed, or by self-identification by a person as Indigenous.
Torres Strait Islanders are ethnically and culturally distinct, despite extensive cultural exchange with some of the Aboriginal groups, and the Torres Strait Islands are mostly part of Queensland but have a separate governmental status.
In the 2016 Australian Census, Indigenous Australians comprised 3.3% of Australia’s population, with 91% of these identifying as Aboriginal only, 5% Torres Strait Islander, and 4% both.
Voting is a method for a group, such as a meeting or an electorate, in order to make a collective decision or express an opinion usually following discussions, debates or election campaigns. Democracies elect holders of high office by voting. Residents of a place represented by an elected official are called “constituents”, and those constituents who cast a ballot for their chosen candidate are called “voters”. There are different systems for collecting votes, but while many of the systems used in decision-making can also be used as electoral systems, any which cater for proportional representation can only be used in elections.
In smaller organizations, voting can occur in different ways. Formally via ballot to elect others for example within a workplace, to elect members of political associations or to choose roles for others. Informally voting could occur as a spoken agreement or as a verbal gesture like a raised hand or electronically.
