President Ghani to sign release of Taliban prisoners, peace talks expected soon

Long-awaited peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban could start in Qatar within a week. The Taliban has insisted that a final batch of prisoners must be freed first. President Ashraf Ghani is expected to sign a decree ordering their release today. The government accepted the advice from a grand assembly of elders on Sunday to release 400 remaining Taliban prisoners. That paves the way for talks to end a war that has ground on since the United States invaded Afghanistan in late 2001.
