Bloomberg QuickTake: Now published this video item, entitled “Portland Protesters Topple Statues, Damage Buildings as Police Declare Riot” – below is their description.
A group of demonstrators knocked down statues of presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln and damaged buildings and storefronts in Portland, Oregon, late on October 11, as police declared the event a riot. Protest organizers had promoted the event on social media as an “Indigenous Peoples Day of Rage,” Oregon Live reported. Police reported a “mass gathering” formed at Southwest Park Avenue and Southwest Madison Street late on October 11, and said protesters attempted to tear down a statue with a chain. Police said they received reports of windows being broken and subsequently declared a riot. Oregon Live reported that police intervened an hour after the first statue fell, dispersing the crowd and appearing to make several arrests. This footage, filmed by Independent Media PDX, shows damage to the Oregon Historical Society. According to Oregon Live, protesters targeted the Roosevelt statue because the 26th president “promoted assimilation into white culture including the allotment system, by which Native American land was allotted to those who became US citizens and the remainder was made available to white settlers.” Oregon Live reported that the Lincoln statue was toppled because he ordered the execution of 38 Dakota men “after the Dakota-U.S. War of 1862 in the largest mass execution in a single day in American history.”Bloomberg QuickTake: Now YouTube Channel
