Pope Francis wrapped up his visit to Greece on Monday meeting with young Catholics at the Saint Dionysius Catholic School in Athens.

During his address to the children, the Pope urged young people to follow their dreams and not be tempted by consumerism or “becoming obsessed with appearances.”

“Realise that your worth is in who you are and not what you have. Your worth is not in the brand of the dress or shoes you wear, but because you are unique,” the pontiff told his young audience.

Francis echoed a common theme he has raised with young people, encouraging them to stay fast in their faith, even amid doubts, and resist the temptation to pursue materialist goals.

He cited Homer’s Odyssey and the temptation posed by the sirens.

“Nowadays, we risk forgetting who we are, becoming obsessed with appearances, bombarded with messages that make life depend on what we wear, the car we drive, how others see us,” said the Pope.

He urged his audience to spend less time on social media or watching television, and to get out of their comfort zone.

“It’s easier to sit on the couch in front of the TV,” he said. “But that is for old people, not for the young.”
