Pope Francis has become the first pontiff to endorse same-sex civil unions after made remarks in an interview for the documentary film Francesco, which premiered at the Rome Film Festival on October 21, 2020. Before becoming leader of the Catholic Church, Francis spoke about the issue while still archbishop of Buenos Aires. He voiced support for civil unions as an alternative to gay marriage which was legalised in 2010. Francis’ latest comments have been welcomed by the United Nations.
