It’s 76 years since the Warsaw Uprising – the largest underground resistance operation in Nazi-occupied Europe, which began on August 1, 1944. It saw an estimated 18,000 insurgents killed and Warsaw virtually razed to the ground as the Germans were driven from the Polish capital. However, some marchers decided that the celebration was a good opportunity to chant homophobic slogans and burn a rainbow flag: the symbol of LGBTQ Pride.
Clearly, the irony of far-right protesters burning a Pride flag at a march to celebrate victory over a far-right regime that murdered homosexuals wasn’t quite obvious enough for them to comprehend.
