South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Police stop slaughter in Ecuador prison after rioting and gang massacre kills at least 118 inmates” – below is their description.

Police regained control of a prison in Ecuador’s largest city Guayaquil on September 30, 2021, after several days of riots and clashes that killed at least 118 inmates. The brutal wave of violence began after rival prison gangs, allegedly with ties to Mexican crime cartels, went to war over which group would dominate in the facility. Ecuadorean President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency for the nation’s prisons system, suspending the rights of prisoners, as about 900 police and tactical units stormed cell blocks in the port city. Investigators are trying to determine how inmates were able to access weapons used in the fighting. It has been a violent year for Ecuador’s overcrowded prisons, where at least 230 people have died in clashes since the start of 2021.
