There are 2,600 long-term missing persons in Australia, but their families may now be one step closer to receiving closure.
The Australian Federal Police have begun testing hundreds of unidentified human remains in a new dedicated forensics laboratory based in Canberra.
New technology will allow forensic specialists to estimate an individual’s year of birth and death, ancestral origin, hair and eye colour and even their facial appearance.
