Prime Minister Scott Morrison has spruiked Australia’s action on climate change during the virtual G20 Summit overnight – hosted by Saudi Arabia. Speaking from within quarantine, Mr Morrison said “Australia remains firmly committed to the Paris Agreement and the commitments we have made”. “We have overachieved on our Kyoto targets by some 430 million tonnes … and we’re right on track to not just meet out Paris target, but to beat it,” he said. United States President Donald Trump, however, delivered a very different speech in which he defended his decision to remove America from the Paris Agreement. “A very unfair act for the United States, the Paris Accord was not designed to save the environment, it was designed to kill the American economy,” Mr Trump said. “I refused to surrender millions of American jobs and send millions of American dollars to the world’s worst polluters and environmental offenders, and that’s what would have happened.” The summit also focused on formulating a plan for the fair and equitable distribution of a coronavirus vaccine globally – should one be made available. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was highly critical of the lack of a plan, saying more needed to be done to ensure poorer nations were able to access a vaccine when one came along.
