Pink Lagoon: Drone buzzes over Las Coloradas pools in Mexico

Drone footage captured the bright pink Las Coloradas lagoon on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The aerial shots show the vivid pink pools edged by piles of white salt bounded by a forested area on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The hue is the result of tiny marine microorganisms which emit a reddish-pink pigment.

Salt extraction has been carried out in this part of Mexico since the Mayans lived there. The lagoon is now part of the Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, which protects nearly 150,000 acres of beaches, forests and dunes.
