South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Pineapple bumper harvest hailed in China as Beijing bans imports of the fruit from Taiwan” – below is their description.
As Pineapple farmers on the Chinese mainland celebrated the sweet success of a bumper harvest, Beijing’s relationship with Taipei has soured over a ban on imports of the fruit from Taiwan. Mainland officials said the March 1, 2021, ban was in response to the discovery of pests on Taiwanese pineapple imports “on multiple occasions” since 2020. Authorities in Taiwan responded by urging the public to support local growers by purchasing “freedom pineapples”, in a campaign that is the latest reflection of rising tension between the mainland and the self-ruled island Beijing views as a renegade province.
