‘Pig deal’ with China raises fears in Argentina over potential virus outbreak

A government plan to turn Argentina into a pork powerhouse with Chinese investment is generating unprecedented resistance from the Argentinian general public. Environmental activists, who are worried about potential virus outbreaks from industrial-scale pig farming, gathered in the capital Buenos Aires on August 25, 2020. Some clashed with police during a protest against a deal with China to invest billions of dollars in the local hog industry to produce pork for export.
