Philippine plastic waste crisis spirals as buyers choose cheap sachet packaging

South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Philippine plastic waste crisis spirals as buyers choose cheap sachet packaging” – below is their description.

The Philippines is the planet’s worst polluter in terms of the release of plastic waste into the ocean, responsible for as much as 36 per cent of the total global volume of such pollution according to a 2022 study by the University of Oxford in the UK. Environmentalists say the crisis has deepened because most Filipino shoppers prefer to buy products in tiny, cheap plastic packets or sachets rather than larger and less-wasteful packaging. While proposed legislation to ban single-use plastic items has not been adopted so far, a ratified bill requiring consumer brands to contribute to the cost of collecting and disposing plastic waste is awaiting a final signature from outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte.
