South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Philippine news site Rappler ordered to close just before president’s last day in office” – below is their description.
Authorities in the Philippines pressed ahead with efforts to shut down news website Rappler, two days before the company’s arch-rival President Rodrigo Duterte leaves office. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued an order on June 28, 2022, affirming its decision to revoke the Rappler’s certificates of incorporation. Rappler’s CEO and co-founder, Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa, said the publication would fight against the order. Duterte ends his six-year term as leader of the Philippines on June 30, when he will be succeeded by Ferdinand Marcos Jnr, the son of a former dictator who presided over widespread human rights abuses and corruption.
