Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney and Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw discussed on Tuesday the protests that took place overnight on Monday following the fatal shooting of Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old Black man, by police. Kenney said there needs to be a “speedy and transparent resolution for the sake of Mr. Wallace, his family, the officers and for all of Philadelphia.” Outlaw stated “there are many questions that demand answers,” and that “residents have my assurance that those questions will be fully addressed by the investigation.” Kenney also said the protests following the fatal police shooting showed “further evidence of the anguish of Black and Brown residents,” adding that his “commitment to understanding that anguish and to accomplishing truly lasting reforms is unwavering.” Protests broke out in the city after police had shot and killed a Black man they said had been armed with a knife. Four police officers were injured. Footage on social media shows police beating protesters with batons as officers and demonstrators clashed in violent exchanges early Tuesday morning. A vehicle was also seen on fire late Monday night, with fire-fighters in attendance.
