Petrol price relief can not be extended beyond tonight, says the federal treasurer, but he’s asked the competition watchdog to monitor how quickly petrol companies increase prices once the fuel excise relief is removed.

“There are hundreds of millions of litres of petrol in tanks underground paid for under the existing excise regime, and the ACCC will be particularly attentive to the fact that a lot of that fuel was bought at cheaper price,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers.
