Members of the Congressional Black Caucus said the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin was the “first step” in justice being served, but said more needs to be done to “save lives.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi gathered with members of the Black Caucus after the verdict saying, “thank God, the jury validated what we saw.””

Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, at the same news conference as Pelosi said: “This is the first step,” Beatty said, adding, “Today we start to change the world,”

Officer Derek Chauvin was convicted Tuesday of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd.
