Pelosi can come to Taiwan and go, but what about the people there?

CGTN published this video item, entitled “Pelosi can come to Taiwan and go, but what about the people there?” – below is their description.

At a time when everyone thinks the world can’t take any more disruptions, Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, visited China’s Taiwan region recently and met with its leader Tsai Ing-wen. Her visit becomes the highest-level U.S. visit to Taiwan in 25 years. As countermeasures, China’s armed forces have begun live-fire military drills and missile tests around Taiwan, in six exclusion zones encircling the island. Is it legitimate for the U.S. to maintain contact with Taiwan? Why can’t President Joe Biden stop her? And who will ultimately be affected? Sit back and watch this video.

In This Story: Taiwan

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. Neighbouring countries include the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.

The political status of Taiwan is complicated. The Republic of China (ROC) is no longer a member of the UN, having been replaced by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1971. Taiwan is claimed by the PRC, which refuses diplomatic relations with countries that recognise the ROC. Taiwan maintains official diplomatic relations with 14 out of 193 UN member states and the Holy See.
