There’s been a free fall in relations between the world’s top two economies – China and U.S. President Donald Trump is now seeking a forced sale of TikTok, and last month, the U.S. abruptly ordered China to close its consulate in Houston. It seems everywhere you turn, bilateral relations are in a sorry state. Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai recently said relations were indeed at the lowest point in nearly half a century. So can China and the U.S. get past the insults and rhetoric, and find common ground? CGTN’s Tian Wei spoke to Max Baucus, the 11th U.S. ambassador to China from 2014 to 2017.
