Palestinians on Saturday wept over the body of a man killed in an Israeli air strike as the attack on Gaza spilled into a second day.
Israel launched an operation against Islamic Jihad on Friday, killing one of the group’s senior commanders in a surprise daytime air strike on a high-rise building in Gaza City and drawing rocket salvoes in response.
The Israeli strikes have killed at least 15 Palestinians, including a five-year-old child and four Islamic Jihad militants, and wounded at least 90 other people, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
As darkness fell, Israeli authorities said sirens sounded in southern and central areas, while images broadcast by Israeli television stations appeared to show a number of missiles being shot down by air defence systems.
