Buckingham Palace argues it has been cleared of any allegations of interference in Australia’s government after the release of 1,200 pages of private letters between the Queen and governor-general Sir john Kerr in the lead up to the dismissal of prime minister Gough Whitlam in 1975.
The debate over what role the Queen played in the ousting of Mr Whitlam has fascinated Australians for decades, but it appears she was kept at arms length from any discussions about toppling the elected leader.
