Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Thursday that the province would be investing up to $1.9 billion per year for the next four years in long-term care, which he said would help create 27,000 new positions in long-term care homes.
Ford said more staff would help deliver on the province’s commitment to increase daily direct care for residents to four hours a day by 2025.
The premier made the announcement alongside Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care.
Ontario reported 2,139 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, marking the second highest single-day increase to date and bringing the provincial total to 146,535. The death toll in Ontario has risen to 4,035 as 43 more deaths were reported.
According to the Ministry of Long-Term Care, there have been 2,446 deaths reported among residents and patients in long-term care homes across Ontario which is an increase of four deaths.
There are 140 current outbreaks in homes, an increase of five from the previous day.
