Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Tuesday that the province would invest $10 million over the next three years on efforts to “identify, investigate, protect and commemorate” burial sites at former residential schools in the province. Ford said the work would be led by Indigenous community leaders and that it would provide mental health supports to those impacted by residential schools.

The premier made the announcement alongside Ontario Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford, as well as Indigenous elders and leaders.

“There is painful but necessary work ahead, and we must confront what happened for reconciliation to be achieved,” Ford said.

Rickford added that Ontario is working on a framework that other provinces could adopt in their efforts to aid Indigenous communities in locating and investigating burial sites at former residential schools.
