Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced on Tuesday that his government is issuing a request for proposal to advance tunnelling work for Scarborough’s subway extension project which he described as ” the most ambitious transit project this country has ever seen.”
Ford said that his government has passed legislation to remove roadblocks for the project and that three teams were already shortlisted to bid on the tunnelling work.
The project will provide 3,000 full-time job opportunities for people during the construction period, the premier added.
he also said that the extension will be able to handle over 100,000 daily boardings once built, and will make 34,000 more jobs will be accessible for people within a 10-minute walk of the new stations.
Ford added that the new subway extension will cut carbon emissions by over 10,000 tons a year.
He congratulated new Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on her new role following the resignation of former finance minister Bill Morneau and said “if there is one person I have confidence in, it’s Chrystia Freeland.”
On the coronavirus front, Ontario reported 125 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 40,870.
