Ontario health officials give COVID-19 update as top doctor set to retire | FULL

Global News published this video item, entitled “Ontario health officials give COVID-19 update as top doctor set to retire | FULL” – below is their description.

Ontario health officials are expected to provide an update Monday on the province’s COVID-19 response and vaccine rollout.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and deputy chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe are expected to speak.

The update comes after the provincial government said Williams would be retiring June 26, with a motion set to be tabled in the legislature Monday for the chief medical officer of health for Kingston, Frontenac, Addington and Lennox, Dr. Kieran Moore, to take over the role on June 27.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a statement Sunday that Moore would start working with Williams on June 7 to ensure a smooth transition and thanked the province’s top doctor for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that the province was pushing forward earlier with second COVID-19 vaccinations due to a stable supply of vaccines, and would begin by prioritizing those aged 80 and older starting May 31. Those 70 and older can book an appointment beginning June 14.

Ontarians between the ages of 12 and 25 years old will become eligible for a second shot in early August, ahead of the start of school.

Officials said Friday that the province has completed first doses for 65 per cent of the adult population. More than 8.6 million doses of vaccine have been administered and nearly 625,000 Ontarians are fully vaccinated with two shots.
