South China Morning Post published this video item, entitled “Oil spill feared from sinking chemical cargo ship off Sri Lanka after two-week blaze aboard vessel” – below is their description.
A cargo ship carrying tonnes of chemicals is sinking off Sri Lanka’s west coast, according to its navy on June 2, 2021. The Singapore-registered MV X-Press Pearl, carrying nearly 1,500 containers, including 25 tonnes of nitric acid and other chemicals and cosmetics, caught fire following an explosion on May 20. Tonnes of plastic pellets have already fouled nearby beaches and fishermen now fear an even greater ecological disaster if hundreds of tonnes of oil from the vessel’s fuel tanks leak into the sea. The ship left India for Singapore via Colombo on May 15.
