Officer alleged to have fatally shot Duante Wright resigns along with police chief, mayor announces

Global News published this video item, entitled “Officer alleged to have fatally shot Duante Wright resigns along with police chief, mayor announces” – below is their description.

Brooklyn Center, Minnesota Mayor Mike Elliott held a press conference on Tuesday where he discussed the fatal shooting of Black man Duante Wright during a traffic stop.

Elliott announced that Kim Porter, the officer alleged to have shot Wright, has resigned along with the police chief.

Brooklyn Centre city council also voted to turn over police department command to the mayor’s office in the wake of the shooting, and Elliott outlined a new command structure during the press conference.

The shooting created unrest with police clashing with angry protesters overnight, with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets. Anti-police protesters have already spent recent days rallying in Minneapolis as the trial of Chauvin, a white former city policeman, enters its third week in a courthouse ringed with barriers and soldiers from the National Guard.

Chauvin is charged with murder and manslaughter for kneeling on the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, who was handcuffed during the deadly arrest last May, video of which sparked global protests against police brutality.
