Former President US Barack Obama expressed confidence in Joe Biden’s choices for key national security staff Monday, but said America’s pivot from “America First” to its traditional role as global leader would take time after Biden becomes president in January. “There has been some damage done that is going to take some time to to to dig ourselves out of,” Obama said in an interview with the Washington Post. “But there’s no doubt that Joe’s got the right people to do it, and I have every confidence they’ll be able to do it,” Obama said. The incoming president will nominate longtime adviser Antony Blinken to be secretary of state. He is also selecting Jake Sullivan to be his national security adviser. Biden’s emerging Cabinet marks a return to a more traditional approach to governing, relying on veteran policymakers with deep expertise and strong relationships in Washington and global capitals. Obama spoke to the Washington Post days after his memoir, “A Promised Land,” went on sale. The former president played an important role in the Biden campaign leading up to the election. He said he’s willing to help Democrats win the two Senate seats now being fought for in Georgia, but he said people in Georgia who have “been working in the trenches,” such as Stacey Abrams are likely to make the biggest difference. He also said the incoming Biden administration has a tough job making sure the coronavirus vaccine is distributed efficiently and effectively following the inauguration. “I think one of the first tasks for the Biden administration coming in is going to be to make sure that we have clear protocols about who gets it first, you know, whether it’s frontline workers, people who are most vulnerable, and then move forward from there,” he said.
