Washington and much of the United States is currently preoccupied with comments made Wednesday by U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power at the end of his term, but according to Michael Waldman, the president of the Brennan Center of Justice at New York University (NYU) Law School, the uproar is overblown. “It’s really not up to him,” Waldman says. “Presidents don’t run our elections. States and counties run our elections. It’s not the party committee of the state and county. It’s election officials and it’s legislators.” Nevertheless, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other top Republicans on Thursday repudiated Trump’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, assuring American voters the lawmakers would accept the outcome of November’s election. Trump made clear his refusal Wednesday in response to a reporter’s question and said he expected his election battle with Democrat Joe Biden to be settled by the Supreme Court. The Republican president’s exchange with reporters set off a fury that prompted several Republicans in Congress to distance themselves from Trump.
