The Royal College of Nursing has set up a £35 million fund to prepare for strike action, amid growing anger at the proposal to give most NHS staff in England a 1% pay rise.

Asked repeatedly about it tonight, Health Secretary Matt Hancock insisted that it was all about affordability. But Labour said it was an insult to health service “heroes” who’ve been on the frontline of the crisis.
