ABC News (Australia) published this video item, entitled “NT mine in lockdown, hundreds of FIFO workers told to isolate after man tests positive | ABC News” – below is their description.
A major gold mine in the Northern Territory is in lockdown and 900 FIFO workers who have left the mine in recent days have been told to isolate after a worker tested positive to COVID-19.
The positive case was discovered at the Newmont-owned Granites gold mine, 540 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, late yesterday.
About 750 workers who are currently at the mine are also in isolation.
Chief Health Officer Hugh Heggie said the situation was very serious.
“I want to be very clear. We are at risk,” Dr Heggie said.
The FIFO worker travelled from Bendigo in Victoria to Brisbane on June 17, where he was directed to quarantine at a hotel because of Queensland COVID directions relating to Victoria.
He was allowed to fly on a charter plane to the mine in the Tanami Desert the following day because regional Victoria was not considered a COVID hotspot by NT authorities at that time.
