No indication Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons: White House

Global News published this video item, entitled “No indication Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons: White House” – below is their description.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre spoke Tuesday about the ongoing war in Ukraine by Russia, including apparent threats of the use of nuclear weapons, saying that the U.S. has not seen reason “to adjust our own strategic nuclear posture,” nor is there indication Russia has plans to “imminently use” nuclear weapons.

“When it comes to potential nuclear threat, we have been very clear about that. We take any nuclear weapons or any nuclear sabre-rattling very seriously here,” she said.

She was responding to questions about security assistance being provided to Ukraine by the U.S., saying it was a “continued commitment” they have shown to the eastern European country.

In This Story: Nuclear Weapons

A nuclear weapon (also called an atom bomb, nuke, atomic bomb, nuclear warhead, A-bomb, or nuclear bomb) is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission (fission bomb) or from a combination of fission and fusion reactions (thermonuclear bomb). Both bomb types release large quantities of energy from relatively small amounts of matter.

A nuclear device no larger than traditional bombs can devastate an entire city by blast, fire, and radiation. Since they are weapons of mass destruction, the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a focus of international relations policy.
